Wow, isn't this embarrassing....? Yes, it is. So, with a mere 130 days left of his mission, I now make a feeble attempt to bring this blog up to date...I will let the photos do the talking. If you frequent Facebook, Elder Way has periodically updated his photos and comments. The good Elder is scheduled to return 13 January 2010.

Elder Way is turning 20!!!!!
Elder Way's birthday is July 10!!!! Feel free to send him birthday greetings at the address listed on the right, below the picture of the temple!!!
I was informed the other day my blogging skills need a tremendous amount of improvement . . . (thanks, Sudz!) which means you should find some new material here in the near future - hopefully the next couple days.
Happy Independence day!!

At long last . . . some new reading
To those who check in on a regular basis, I apologize for not giving you anything new to read until now!!
The Mother's Day phone call was fantastic! Elder Way is doing well. For those of you familiar with his finicky eating habits, you will be interested to learn he has ventured outside his comfort zone and sampled the following food items: corn (still doesn't like), hotdogs (still doesn't like & that's okay), and carne asada (LOVES).
His Espanol is slowly improving - he said my accent was horrid & I reminded him when he left mine was better than his. I believe he is not immersed in the language as he would be outside the US, thus, his progress is a bit slower.
He reminded us to engage in daily scripture reading including summarizing in writing what we read. Sounds like a missionary talking, don't you think?
I asked what frightening things he was withholding and he mentioned visiting a less-than-safe part of Oakland and being checked on by two different sets of police officers. Fortunately, no harm befell the missionaries. He also mentioned a gentleman who yells at them to leave his street whenever they pass by.
There are a few baptisms in the works, however, the ward mission will take credit for them.
As he has no access to a television, he was oblivious to David Archuleta's AI success, however, he did send an email asking me to buy the latest CD of one of his favorite groups. How did he know of it's release I asked - "a member told me" was his reply. Sounds like I need to send them a copy of the DesNews.

An update!
Good Elder Way sent word home about a mother who would like her two sons, Isaac (10) and LeAmor (11) to be baptized. The missionaries see much enthusiasm and potential in Isaac. Don't today's youth need all the help they can get?? Looks like it comes back to Mom again in this situation. Bless her!
Sean had a faith-building experience tracting with an elder from Hawaii called to speak Chinese. He felt left "high & dry" in the Espanol department and managed to come through it saying it was a good day.
And, he misses his dog . . . a lot.

Potential baptism already!
Elder Way excitedly reported a "really nice guy," Luis, tentatively chose a baptism date. Luis welcomed Elders Pew and Way as "a breath of fresh air" after being lost in the transfer shuffle. The Elders have also been providing service to the less-fortunate by assisting an inebriated gentleman from the gutter onto the sidewalk until an ambulance arrived to escort him to his temporary shelter for the following 24-48 hours. This week's email reported he is having fun and his companion and he are working with some part-member families and the accompanying challenges. Once Sean's memory card arrives home, photos from his perspective will be posted right here. Stay tuned!

Here's evidence he arrived at his destination intact. Unless, of course, those are cardboard cut-outs . . . After lunch at In 'n Out, the new arrivals were given the immediate opportunity to proselyte. Me thinks that might help overcome the anticipatory jitters. The good Elder and one of the mission president's sons went to elementary and middle school together, which we believe to be a very positive factoid. I choose to interpret Sean's smile as a good sign.

Our Elder arrived safely in California and his first assignment is in Oakland. He reports "AHH it is soo beautifl (sic) out here.." so it would seem there's no need to feel too sorry for him. His trainer is "really nice" and, we trust, is showing him the ropes. We can't wait to post his experiences as he shares them with us.
